Millefleurs oval platter 8 by Gien

For 200 years, Gien faience has been appreciated for its distinctive personality: the richness of its colours and the fineness and variety of its shapes. Partly handmade according to the traditions of ancestral craftsmanship and with each piece being unique, Gien faience bears distinctive characteristics such as different nuances in its colours, minute differences in its designs and its shapes, which all contribute to its charm.  ABOUT FAIENCE: Faience is a porous substance which allows liquids such as water to penetrate. It also reacts to differences in temperatures by expanding or contracting. We therefore recommend respecting a few rules when using and cleaning in order to keep our products in good shape for the longest possible time: use in the microwave for reheating only but never for cooking or defrosting, do not use in ovens and feel free to dishwasher wash but avoid soaking overnight or waiting too long before washing.

About Gien

Gien is the most prestigious maker of earthenware in France. The company dates to 1821 when Thomas Hall brought fine English earthenware manufacturing techniques to France. Gien tableware takes inspiration from many sources, including Rouannais patterns from the 18th century, Italian design, Delft earthenware, and styles from the Far East. Artisans and craftsmen today take inspiration from Gien’s rich design past to create classic and modern tableware for today’s consumer. Since Gien dinnerware is fired at lower temperatures than porcelain, its colors are notably rich and warm. Stronger than pottery or ceramics, faience is a wonderful choice for everyday tableware.

Every Gien faience piece is 100% manufactured in Gien, France, a small town on the banks of the Loire River. Since its very beginnings, Gien has learned to perfect the art of manufacturing faience. Although the company has developed modern techniques to keep up with the times, it continues to honor the most traditional practices, including paper printing and hand painting. The company is a member of the prestigious Comite Colbert, a consortium of the most recognized French luxury names.
